Ross Juniors Football entered an under 12 girls side into the Gloucester County Girls League back in September. With long journeys to Swindon for games and matches versus clubs such as Cheltenham Town and Gloucester City it was always going to be a stern test. Though after finishing second the previous year expectations were high and the previous squad were joined by 4 new players Beatrice, Sophia, Libby and Fliss. The season started brilliantly with great performances and scorelines for the girls. Bel managed 5 hatricks in the first 5 games! Over the whole season the girls played 12 matches and finished with a record of 10 wins and 2 draws. Hannah in goal when called on was outstanding and the defence of Lara, Izzy, Millie, Amy, Molly and Meg were misery conceding just 6 goals in 12 games. Goals mainly came from the midfield of Libby, Georgie, Fliss, Bel and Sophia and the attackers of Millie G and Beatrice. Going in to the last two games Ross had their two toughest opponents. Third placed Gloucester Javelins had proved challenging opponents in the previous match which Ross won back in October 3-2, this time Ross missed their usual proficiency in front of goal and drew 1-1. The goal to win the league was just not to come despite multiple chances. This set up a last day title decider versus Gloucester Meteors. The home match Ross won 3-1 in a combative game. The rematch last Sunday left Ross needing to draw or win and Gloucester the home team needing a win. With over 90 spectators this was the match of the season and proved to be a tense affair. Ross controlled possession and had some good early play leading to some decent chances. As the game progressed play became more even but the pressing from the Ross players and the work ethic was exceptional. Gloucester has very few decent chances and any shot on goal was met by the wall called Hannah. Ross held firm as the clock ticked by and the whistle went, Ross became champions. The coaches could not be prouder of the girls who finished season with 61 goals for and 6 against. Bel finished top scorer with 21, Millie second with 11 and Beatrice with 10. One of the highlights was Mollys first goal for the club and The defence was immense. The whole team played as a team throughout and every girl shone. When’s player was subbed a player just as good came on, the quality of the squad was exceptional. Now the season is over the girls have a variety of friendlies, Futsal, cup games and an end of season friendly vs Arsenal girls at St George’s Park in May.
